Generational warfare has broken out in Dragon Gate, and it threatens to bring sweeping changes to the faction scene within the promotion…again.
It all started on November 6 at Dragon Gate’s Korakuen Hall show. Open The Dream Gate Champion and Dragon Gate top dog Naruki Doi came out at the top of the show and cut a promo that could be looked at, when all is said and done, as the starting point for whatever Dragon Gate has planned in 2010.

Doi kills Shingo with a dropkick (image credit: Dragon Gate)
Doi spoke of Dragon Gate’s recent tour of Europe and his successful October 25 title defense (which is drawing highly rave reviews by many) against Susumu Yokosuka at Fukuoka’s Hakata Star Lanes venue. Doi also called out the veteran wrestlers in Dragon Gate, declaring that the younger blood in Dragon Gate, such as himself, was the heart of the promotion and that the vets were more or less dead weight. He then challenged the veterans to prove themselves against the “New Generation” of talent in Dragon Gate.
Later on in the evening, following a main event that featured Doi’s WORLD-1 faction (Doi, Masato Yoshino, BxB Hulk and Kotoka) defeating Real Hazard’s Ryo Saito, Genki Horiguchi, MAZADA, and Dr. Muscle (more on him later), members of the Zetsurins faction, namely Masaaki Mochizuki, Don Fujii and Magnitude Kishiwada, came out to the ring and accepted Doi’s divisive generational challenge. The Zetsurins were soon followed by WARRIORS-5 members CIMA and Gamma, who aligned with the Zetsurins to meet Doi’s challenge.
Chaos erupted as YAMATO, a member of KAMIKAZE, darted out and promptly attacked CIMA, who had earlier assaulted YAMATO with a Singapore cane. Shingo Takagi and Akira Tozawa followed YAMATO, and Yoshino and Hulk soon joined in on the fray on behalf of Doi.
After the smoke cleared, a 5 on 5 generational challenge match was made: Doi, Yoshino, Hulk, Takagi and YAMATO vs. CIMA, Gamma, Mochizuki, Fujii, and Kishiwada. Tozawa interjected and said that he was apart of this and wanted in on the match as well. CIMA then cut in and said Tozawa was garbage and that he would match Tozawa’s presence by making Stalker Ichikawa a member of their team to make it a 6 on 6.
Freeze. Story time. First, allow me to remind you who Stalker Ichikawa is by referring you to something I wrote in the last Opening of the Puro Daily Gate:
“Who the hell is Stalker Ichikawa, you ask? Ichikawa is a highly popular comedy act in Dragon Gate, not to mention a graduate of Ultimo Dragon’s Toryumon Dojo, whose raison d’etre in Dragon Gate is to entertain and send the fans into fit of laughter on an almost nightly basis. He resembles, well, some sort of human insect and comes to the ring with the “William Tell Overture” blasting on the arena sound system. His offense is basically innocuous, he’s frequently defeated by members of both sexes and he’s usually defeated in less than five minutes. Ichikawa is actually good friends with both CIMA and Don Fuji in real life, and on occasion, the three take the time to entertain the line of people waiting to enter the arena to take in a Dragon Gate show.”
Keeping this in mind, it needs to be pointed out that in real life, CIMA and Tozawa do not like each other. Tozawa has even been alleged to have been a guilty party in the recent Cora the monkey scandal that rocked Dragon Gate earlier this year, a scandal that CIMA played a role in stopping. To Puro Dude’s archives:
“The DG Dojo has a pet monkey, and through posts made on various wrestlers’ blogs, it came to light that the monkey had been abused. After much confusion as to who did what, it seemed that RYOMA, a rookie on the DG roster this year, was the leader in the abuse to the monkey. DG veteran Ken’ichiro Arai first brought the abuse to light, and CIMA took the monkey, who he had originally brought to the Dojo to be a pet, to his parents’ home to отчасти обычном did nothing to help Dragon Gate in the eyes of fans, and with all the confusion, there was some concern that other young wrestlers with more of a veteran status on the roster were also involved, though nothing was proven. At the very least, it again shone a positive light on Ken Arai and CIMA, who I’ve only ever heard great things about.”
The very real animosity between CIMA and Tozawa often shows on stage, and on this particular occasion it was pretty obvious. Comparing someone who fashions themselves as a serious competitor and comparing them to a curtain jerking comedy act like Stalker Ichikawa is as vicious as it gets. CIMA’s shoot-burial of Tozawa ranks, in my book, as probably one of the funniest things that’s happened this year in Puro.
Getting back to business, CIMA trashed Tozawa and suggested adding Stalker Ichikawa to the team, but elected to let Mochizuki have a say on the situation before anything became “set in stone.” Whew. Mochizuki thankfully had someone much better in mind…someone a bit familiar to the Dragon Gate faithful: Takuya Sugawara.
Sugawara, who last wrestled for Dragon Gate back in 2004, was mysteriously fired from the promotion, along with his Aagon Iisou stable mates Shuji Kondo (of All Japan Pro Wrestling), YASSHI, Owashi and Shogo, on December 31, 2004, allegedly for behavioral problems. I can’t say that I’ve ever heard of an entire faction being fired at once for behavioral problems before, so their firing does seem more than a bit strange.
Kondo and YASSHI landed in All Japan Pro Wrestling after being fired and joined another Dragon Gate alum’s stable, The Voodoo Murders. Sugawara didn’t resurface in the world of wrestling until the launch of DragonDoor, a promotion founded under Ultimo Dragon’s Toryumon banner by Noriaki Kawabata on April 27, 2005. In DragonDoor, the Aagon Iisou faction reunited and was easily the most popular act in the company.
Sugawara presently spends most of his time working for Pro Wrestling ZERO1 in Japan, where he and Minoru Fujita hold the record for the longest reign as NWA Intercontinental Tag Team champion in the history of the promotion (399 days).
Whatever happened between Sugawara and Dragon Gate in the past now appears to be water under the bridge as Sugawara is back. Suga promptly agreed to join up with the Veteran Army of CIMA, Gamma, Mochizuki, Fujii and Kishiwada to take on Dragon Gate’s “new generation” of Doi, Yoshino, Shingo, Tozawa, YAMATO and BxB Hulk.
Sugawara’s presence in this altercation is a real nice touch, as well as an indication that Dragon Gate is willing to acknowledge its past despite the controversy surrounding Sugawara’s dismissal. Part of me sort of wishes that it was Dragon Gate alum Mangum TOKYO that walked out instead of Sugawara, but I’ll accept Sugawara…for now.
So you might be asking yourself “when is this 6 on 6 match going to happen?” Fortunately for you, I have an answer to that question: December 3, 2009 at Dragon Gate’s return to Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall. The match will be contested under Naniwa Style Elimination rules. Don’t be fooled by the fancy talk; it’s an elimination match.
But wait…there’s more!
Anthony W. Mori came out after the 6 on 6 was made and addressed Sugawara as “Henry”. Why? I have the answer for that as well.
Once upon a time, Mori was part of a faction known as the Royal Brothers with Sugwara, who was known then as Henry III Sugawara, and another gentleman by the name of Phillip J. Fukumasa.
Back in the Toryumon days, Aagon Iisou heavily recruited Sugawara, but he outwardly refused their advances for sometime until Sugawara finally betrayed Mori and Fukumasa to leave the Royal Brothers and join Aagon Iisou. Mori is still pissed about that, so a match was made (Mori and Mochizuki vs. Sugawara and Minoru Fujita) for Dragon Gate’s November 28 Buyuden Show, which we will be discussing shortly.
Never let it be said by anyone that missing one single Dragon Gate show is a good idea. Missing one show can be equivalent to missing 3 months of storylines anywhere else…and they have this one thing called continuity, which is something WWE creative does not believe the American public is intelligent enough to deserve.
With the seeds of war planted, Dragon Gate rolled into Osaka on November 23 and drew a crowd of 6,500 people to the Osaka Prefecturual Gym to check out GATE OF DESTINY 2009. This year’s show had some mighty cavernous boots to fill as the 2008 GATE OF DESTINY show is widely considered to be Dragon Gate’s best show of 2008, and for good reason; last year’s Gate of Destiny was headlined by Shingo defending his Open the Dream Gate championship against Susumu Yokosuka, Masato Yoshino defending his Open the Brave Gate championship against Dragon Kid, and Cyber Kong and YAMATO defending their Twin Gate championship against Naruki Doi and Naoki Tanisaki. Every single of those matches is highly rated by many fans (including yours truly) and what’s even better is that those three matches were supported by a strong undercard.
This year’s Gate of Destiny, according to early reports and fan scuttlebutt, failed to meet the standard set by 2008’s G.O.D. The tag team match between Dragon Kid & Masato Yoshino and Ryo Saito & MAZADA was described as “messy” in a report on dgusa.puroresufan.com. The match ended in a disqualification, which lead to Yoshino and Dragon Kid asking for a match of any kind involving Saito and MAZADA, with Dragon Kid offering to put his mask on the line to get it. Saito and MAZADA agreed and put their hair on the line to match Dragon Kid’s wager.
It was then announced that the “Escape Rules Hair vs. Mask 5 Way Cage Match” would be making its return to Dragon Gate at the FINAL GATE show in Fukuoka on December 27. What that means is simply this: whoever is the last man left inside the cage after all other combatants have escaped the cage will either lose their hair or their mask, depending on which one they have. Strangely, the recently returned Dr. Muscle was made a part of this fray.
So who is Dr. Muscle and why is he important? The answer can, unsurprisingly, be found within the story of one Dragon Gate’s former factions, The Muscle Outlaw’z. The Muscle Outlaw’z (or MO’z for short) was a faction that was founded in Dragon Gate back on April 23, 2006 by former Blood Generation members Naruki Doi, Masato Yoshino, Naoki Tanisaki and Gamma with the intention of competing with former Blood Generation leader CIMA’s new faction, Typhoon. Other members of the MO’z came to include the likes of Genki Horiguchi, Magnitude Kishiwada, Yasushi Kanda, Kinta Tomoaka, Cyber Kong and YAMATO.
The faction lasted for roughly two years until it really started to fall apart in April of 2008. YAMATO joined MO’z after attacking his tag team partner of the time, Tanisaki (who recently had returned from a hiatus but chose not to realign with MO’z upon doing so) during a tag team bout against Gamma and Genki прибавляя Yoshino left MO’z and turned face after costing Kanda his hair in a “Mask vs. Hair Cage Survival Six Way Match”. A little over a week later, Shingo and Cyber Kong turned on BxB Hulk, ending the New Hazard faction. Shingo and Kong proceeded to align with the remaining members of MO’z to form the modern day Real Hazard, officially putting an end to MO’z.
This did not make the masked Dr. Muscle a happy man. When the MO’z ended, Muscle, a character who is thought to have been played by a number of Dragon Gate wrestlers over time, vowed to carry on the MO’z name in Dragon Gate until the end of time. Dr. Muscle has, for some reason, chosen to return to action on behalf of the Real Hazard faction that formed from the death of his beloved MO’z. Curiously, the current incarnation of Muscle bares a very strong stylistic resemblance to Susumu Yokosuka, who is coincidentally at odds with CIMA right now.
With CIMA and Gamma’s presence in the Veteran Army of Dragon Gate, it would appear that the future of the WARRIORS-5 faction is in doubt, thus leaving Yokosuka’s future in doubt. Yokosuka, who recently turned in a great match with Ryo Saito in late October, appears to be in line to form a faction of his own soon, and Dr. Muscle could very well be the avenue that Dragon Gate takes to make that happen.
Yokosuka also blew off CIMA and Gamma following Yokosuka’s match against Super Shenlong early in the evening. Later on during a six man tag team bout that featured CIMA, Gamma, and Magnitude Kishiwada defeating Yasushi Kanda, Genki Horiguchi and Dr. Muscle, Gamma tried unsuccessfully to unmask Dr. Muscle. Muscle again looked like Yokosuka in the ring, and given the fact that Yokosuka’s earlier match lasted less than 3 minutes, the signs all point toward Yokosuka being the man beneath the Dr. Muscle mask. None of this is for sure, of course, but it is clear at this juncture that Yokosuka is headed for a change of character because wherever there’s dissension in Dragon Gate, a new faction is soon to follow.
The match of the night, according to reports, was the Open the Twin Gate championship defense of Shingo and YAMATO against Masaaki Mochizuki and Don Fujii. The champions (Shingo and YAMATO) were successful in their third defense of their championship, defeating Mochi and Fujii in just over 20 minutes of action. Mochi and Fujii were offered a rematch but elected to pass on it, citing that they were the Triangle Gate champions (with Akebono) and had the New Generation vs. Veteran Army war to focus on. CIMA and Gamma will be receiving the next shot at the Twin Gate champions. To add a bit of spark to the match, YAMATO referred to CIMA and Gamma as a comedy duo.
Incidentally, it was announced that YAMATO will be apart of the Super J-Cup tournament coming up on December 22 and 23. Stay tuned for coverage of the event by the dynamic duo of Puro, Puro Dude and JLB.
The main event featured a Dream Gate championship defense, as Doi defeated fellow New Generationer BxB Hulk in a near half hour match with the Muscle Bomb. Following the contest, Doi shook hands with Hulk, indicating that whatever may happen in the future in Dragon Gate, Doi and Hulk will be on the same team…of course one can only assume this.
One final note about the G.O.D. show; the annual King of Gate tournament, originally scheduled for December 3, has been postponed in favor of the 6 on 6 elimination war between the New Generation and the Veteran Army. Dragon Gate management felt generational warfare was more important, so the KOG has been rescheduled for the Spring.
Five days later in Buyuden, Sugawara and Fujita invaded Dragon Gate to take on the team of Mochizuki and Anthony W. Mori in the main event. Sugawara and Fujita, as expected, won the contest, but Mori again brought up the Royal Brothers following the match. Sugawara and Mochizuki attempted to change the subject by trying to recruit Mori into the Veteran Army, even though Mori and New Generation head Doi debuted in the same class. Mori agreed to join up with the Veterans only after Sugawara agreed that he and Mori would reform the Royal Brothers after the war was over. Sugwara agreed, but pointed out that they were one member short though, as Philip J. Fukumasa was not present to be a part of the festivities.
Ever resourceful, Mori asked Mochizuki to be the heir to the throne of Fukumasa, and Mochizuki agreed, accepting the crown and stating that the three men (Anthony W. быстро двигаемы III Sugawara and Philip J. Mochizuki, would reunite the Royal Brothers at the first Buyuden show after the end of the war. Royalty is coming to Dragon Gate, ladies and gentl….er…..peasants and commoners.
In news involving Dragon Gate’s business endeavor in the West, Dragon Gate crowned the first ever Open the Freedom Gate champion in Philadelphia, also on November 28. If you thought the Buyuden show was short on big names, Dragon Gate USA would by why.

Open the Freedom Gate (image credit: Dragon Gate USA)
To crown the first ever Freedom Gate champion, Dragon Gate USA decided to hold a tournament involving 14 men that incorporated a unique format: the first round featured four qualifying matches (two singles matches, a four way match, and six way match) to determine the four men who would participate in a four way elimination match later on in the evening to crown the first Freedom Gate champion.
The first qualifying match featured Gran Akuma (a CHIKARA regular) defeating Johnny Gargano (recent semifinalist in the 2009 Peterson Cup tournament), Hallowicked (CHIKARA), Lince Dorado (CHIKARA), and sensational indy tag team The Young Bucks, aka Matt and Nick Jackson. The match was reportedly filled with aerial wonders and physicality. Sounds like a solid opener to me. The Bucks faced off against one another in this match, but those of you hoping for a brotherly divide will not be getting what you hope for, as the brothers shook hands after the match.
The second qualifier featured BxB Hulk defeating Brian Kendrick (yes….THE Brian Kendrick). After the match, Kendrick grabbed a mic and cut a promo declaring that he wrestles for no one but Brian Kendrick. I liked it better when Bryan Danielson said that several years ago.
Several lower card acts came out to take Kendrick out of the ring until Jon Moxley, the “off the wall” character recently mentioned in my feature on the 2009 Jeff Peterson Cup, came out and took control of the mic. After Moxley cut his own promo, the segment ended with Kendrick and Moxley beating everyone up and leaving on their own accord. Hmm…sounds like a bit of a push is in store for these two. These two guys could make for one interesting pairing with their in-ring talent and off the wall antics. Keep an eye on these two in DGUSA people.
The third qualifying match featured a salute to Jorge Skayde, a man whose style has greatly influenced CHIKARA. The match was a four way bout featuring Skayde himself, Mike Quackenbush, CIMA and Super Crazy. Nothing special to report here, other than CIMA won and Super Crazy, thankfully, did not. It’s nice that Super Crazy has a role in this show, given that Crazy had была в форме early stages of Ring of Honor back when that promotion just started with DGUSA exec Gabe Sapolsky at the controls, but Super Crazy’s last stand took place several years ago at One Night Stand when he moonsaulted off a balcony onto the Full Blooded Italians.
The surprise of the evening came in the fourth qualifier, when YAMATO upset Davey Richards, who won the 2009 Jeff Peterson Cup a couple of weekends ago. The match was said to be an absolutely fantastic match and the best of the four qualifiers. Given the talent of the two men involved, I’m not surprised, but I am surprised at the result, given that Richards seemed to be poised to make a run in this tournament. This, however, would not be the last time we heard from Richards on the evening.
The championship four way elimination match featured Gran Akuma, CIMA, BxB Hulk and YAMATO. I have to say this is a HUGE rub for Akuma to be a part of the final. It makes sense given the working agreement between Dragon Gate and CHIKARA, but still, what a stage for AKUMA to be on, working three of the best wrestlers on the planet. Akuma is a big name in CHIKARA and has worked some preliminary matches in other promotions such as Ring of Honor. It’s nice to see him in a main event on a show outside of CHIKARA.
The first elimination of the bout occurred when YAMATO pinned CIMA with a roll up, thanks in part to a low blow on CIMA by Akuma. This was followed a little later by Hulk pinning Akuma to eliminate him, leaving the two men who opened the first Dragon Gate USA pay-per-view to square off against each other to determine the first ever Freedom Gate champion. If you remember, YAMATO got the best of Hulk in their first DGUSA singles match.
On this occasion though, Hulk would get the best of YAMATO, pinning his rival to become the first Freedom Gate champion. It now looks as though a push of BxB Hulk is in full force. Hulk’s first test will be a stiff one, and that’s putting it lightly, because immediately following the match, Davey Richards ran out and attacked the new champion, putting Richards over as the number contender and a major heel in the process. Hulk, if you haven’t noticed or just flat out didn’t know, is MASSIVELY over in the States and might be the most over member of the Dragon Gate roster.
Why? Well, he’s incredibly athletic, works an exciting style, has charisma and does this.
I have to say I’m looking forward to the reign of BxB Hulk and I’m doubly looking forward to seeing how the grace, charisma and athleticism of Hulk blends with the ferocity, strength and intensity of Richards in a championship match.
That’s all for now. Until next time, be sure to lock the Gate on your way out.
