CHCA tightens defense in upset

High school roundup - No. 15 Eagles bounce back to stop No. 10 NCH

Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy trailed visiting North College Hill 13-2 after the first quarter, but the Eagles were able to come back to upset the Trojans 42-35.

North College Hill was ranked No. 10 in the Enquirer’s Divisions II-IV area coaches’ poll, while CHCA was ranked No. 15.

“I reminded them that we should have been down more than we were,” said CHCA coach Mike Sylvester. “In the second half, we really tightened down our defense, started forcing turnovers, and making our shots.”

CHCA outscored NCH 30-16 in the second half behind senior forward Wes Carlson’s team-high 13 points. Junior center Nick Lawley scored six points, and grabbed 10 rebounds.

NCH’s Jalen Lowly scored a game-high 20 points. CHCA improved to 3-1 with the win, and NCH falls to 1-2.

Badin 54, Alter 53: David Morner was 6-6 from the line in the fourth quarter, while Badin shot 11-12 as a team in the final quarter as it held on for the win.

Senior Scott Purcell had a game-high 21 points for Badin.

Turpin 75, Loveland 73 (2OT): Senior forward Mike McKnight, who had 11 points in the game, hit a buzzer-beating lay-up for Turpin at the end of the first overtime.

Turpin went up early in the second OT and managed to hold on for the win. The Spartans made 25 out of 37 free throws in the game, which was the difference.

Milford 64, Goshen 31: Goshen kept the score close in the first half, but Milford outscored the Gophers 37-11 in the second half in the rout.

Junior guard Zach Baker led Milford with 11 points and senior guard Wes Minton scored 10 points.

Ross 37, Little Miami 36: Down by two on the game’s final possession, Ross lost control of the ball, but senior guard Danny Lane scooped it up and passed to junior Derek Ridge who hit the shot from behind the 3-point arc with less than a second left for the stunning comeback victory.

The Rams were led by sophomore Cole Stalker’s game-high 11 points.

Anderson 63, Northwest 62 (OT): Northwest missed a shot at the end of regulation to win the game. In overtime, Northwest had a tip-in as time expired but the referees waved it off to give Anderson the victory.

Anderson senior guard Mike Wilkison led the Redskins with 48 points.

Finneytown 56, Reading 34: Finneytown junior point guard Lela Colvin led all scorers with 16 points, five steals and four rebounds.

Harrison 43, Mercy 42: Senior guard Emily Stanton led Harrison with 13 points and seven rebounds.

St. Xavier 2726, Alter 2155, Purcell Marian 2080: St. Xavier’s Chris Weber broke the school record with a 546, rolling a 278 in the first game and then 268. Nick Brunson set the previous record of 531 in 2004.

Harrison 2439, Winton Woods 2038: Adam Maucher rolled a game-high series of 417 for the Wildcats. Winton Woods’ Jason Koeninger had a 392 series.

Elder 2699, Badin 2326, Fenwick 2159: Elder remains unbeaten at 8-0 after defeating Badin and Fenwick. The Panthers were led by Tyler Wood’s game-high series of 454.

Glen Este 2701, Milford 2512: Junior Jason Ashcraft bowled a game-high series of 462, with a high game of 240, but it wasn’t enough for Milford as they the Eagles lost to Glen Este. Junior Jaekob Pesnichak led the way for Glen Este with a series of 425.

Seton 2253, Ursuline 1969: Seton improved to 6-1 on the season behind Pam Kettler’s game-high series of 382.

Mariemont 117, Indian Hill 50 : Mariemont swept the team relays en route to a victory over Indian Hill. Senior Michael Carrigan led Mariemont, winning the 100-yard butterfly (57.19) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.21).

Sophomore Mac Rice posted won the 100-yard backstroke (57.55) and сто yard-freestyle (50.84) for Indian Hill.

Taylor 54.5, Colerain 39.5: Taylor swam past the Cardinals in a close meet. Taylor had three swimmers each win two individual races. Junior Mike Kolkmeier won the 200-yard freestyle (2:16.05) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:12.37). Sophomore Nate Meyer won the 200-yard individual medley (2:31.06) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.85). Senior Brad Hines won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.00) and set a new school record with his win in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.56).

Mariemont 125, Indian Hill 52: Mariemont opened its season with a win as sophomores Mackenzie Shelley won the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.19) and 50-yard freestyle (26.64), and Hannah Vester winning the 500-yard freestyle (5:19.13) and 100-yard butterfly (1:02.67).
